An ellipsis (...) is a set of three dots used in writing to show:
- A pause for suspense β It makes the reader wait, creating tension.
- She turned the handle slowly... but the door wouldnβt budge.
- Something is missing β It shows that part of a sentence or quote has been left out.
- "To be or not to be... that is the question." (Part of the original quote is skipped.)
- A trailing off thought β It shows someone hesitating or not finishing their sentence.
- "I could have sworn I saw something outside..."
Basically, an ellipsis helps make writing more dramatic, mysterious, or natural, just like a pause in real speech!
